He was an infantry soldier in WW1 who displayed excellent artillery defences. Before the war ended, he became commander in chief then later field Marshall in postwar times. During WW2, he contributed to the layout of the Maginot line, which failed miserably. He entered politics, quickly rising through the ranks until he became Premier of France in 1940. when France was overtaken by Germany, he signed an Armistice with Germany in 1940, giving them control of southern France.
