King John has a bad reputation. As Prince John he taxed the people to raise the money to ransom King Richard Lion-Heart. As king he tried to break the power of the barons, and ruled, when possible, without Parliament. Eventually the barons banned together and forced John to agree to a laundry list of demands and guarantees which became known as Magna Carta. In later years, Magna Carta was seen as the guarantee of rights and liberties to which every English subject was entitled.
