What was London like in 1789-1793?

In this time many people were put in workhouses and prison just for not paying of their debt. Charles Dickens was born on the 7th of february in this year and his own father got put in a debt prison. The only way you could get out of such places was if someone paied you out or you paied yourself out. Charles dickens father, john dickens paied his way out with inheritance from a dead relative.

London was usually split into 2 groups: the higher class (the rich) and the lower class (the poor). Most of the lower class worked in workhouses but most would rather die then go there. They had dangerous machines and a lot of people got hurt. Children worked, also. The air was polluted and the poor was very hungry. If you didn't arrive on time to work, you could of been fined or beaten. If you were poor, the houses were small and very close together. If you were rich, you would have a big house far away from each other.

At this time London was the largest city in the Western world. It was very polluted. Coal was the main source of fuel and its fumes mixed with fog to produce horrible smog.

Clean water was not available to the poorer people who were the majority. They lived in horrible slums, mostly in the East End. They were often unemployed and often were hungry even when they worked, as wages were so low. The men did heavy labor, often on the docks. The women did domestic labor. Many of the young women had no way to live except to sell their bodies. Some of the poor worked in factories. Women were paid less than men for the same job. Even children often had to work in factories to help support their families.

There was a middle class which consisted of shopkeepers, etc. Their lives were a little more comfortable. They had houses and food which were decent for their time, but which were well below modern standards. Many of them did not have indoor Plumbing.

The rich lived luxuriously in beautiful mansions furnished with antiques. They dressed in expensive clothes and the women wore expensive jewelry. Most of them had inherited wealth and they did not have to work. They ate dinners with as many as ten courses and went on to evenings at balls, the theatre, the Opera, etc. The women spent the daytime visiting each other. The men spent their time at their clubs where they gambled and drank. Some of the men sat in Parliament or went to the "City" (the business district) to manage their companies for a few hours a day. The rich had many servants and went to their country homes on weekends.
