New York started on the southern end of Manhattan Island in 1609. It began as a Dutch colony. It became an English colony when the Duke of York conquered it. When they saw the difference between the way they were treated and the way England treated their colonies, the people of New York decided they would prefer to be Englishmen. As a result, they absolutely refused to come to the defense of the colony.
That attitude changed completely when George III became king of England.
