Robert E. Lee was a career military officer in the United States Army, serving in various capacities including as an engineer and a cavalry officer. He gained prominence during the Mexican-American War and later became the superintendent of the United States Military Academy at West Point. During the American Civil War, he served as the commanding general of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. After the war, he became president of Washington College (now Washington and Lee University) in Lexington, Virginia.
