Public education in America dates back to the colonies. In 1635 the first public school opened in Boston establishing local control over the educational systems. In 1855 it became clear that more public schools were need to teach the large population of foreign born settling within the country and cities. The population of the country had grown from 2.5 million in 1776 to 20 million in 1845. By 1879 public education was established through out the United States. At that time the newest trend in education was towards more schooling for more students. The first public high schools were also established.
