John Cabot, an Italian explorer, spent much of his adulthood in England after moving there in the late 15th century. He received support from King Henry VII to seek a westward route to Asia, which led to his historic voyage in 1497, where he is credited with being the first European to explore parts of North America since the Vikings. Cabot's later years are less documented, but he undertook another expedition in 1498, which ended in mystery as he and his crew disappeared. His explorations laid the groundwork for later English claims to North America.
