How did the church change the practice of granting indulgences by the late 1400s?

By the late 1400s, the practice of granting indulgences underwent significant changes, moving from a focus on genuine penance and spiritual growth to a more commercialized approach. The Church began selling indulgences as a means to raise funds for projects like the construction of St. Peter's Basilica, which led to widespread criticism and corruption. This shift contributed to the perception that indulgences could be purchased as a shortcut to salvation, ultimately sparking the Reformation and challenging the Church's authority. Reformers like Martin Luther strongly opposed this practice, emphasizing the need for true repentance over financial transactions for forgiveness.
