Soldiers on the home front.
Hitler's advances through Europe were stopped by the Communist forces at Stalingrad. When America occupied Japan, Japan went from a militaristic monarchy to a democratic form of government. Rationing on the home front was one way people suffered during the war. Another way was knowing that friends and/or family may be dying on a battlefield and those at home were helpless to do anything for them.
Personal accounts of a family's experience on the home front during World War 2 can be found at your local library. Most major bookstores have a section designated to war stories.
