Catholic AnswerNot sure about this one, it was either in Philadelphia or Maryland. Very early on, Catholics were tolerated in Maryland, so it is probably a good bet, but there was a very early Catholic Church established in Philadelphia as well. And the Spanish friars brought Catholicism to what is now Florida in the sixteenth century (read the Georgia Martyrs below). The parish of St. Augustine in Florida was founded on Sept. 8, 1565 after Pedro Menendez landed there. So it is the oldest Catholic congregation "of a permanent European Settlement" north of Mexico. The present Church building was completed in 1797 by the Spanish Crown after it reclaimed the city from the British who occupied it due to a prior treaty to replace a smaller structure. In 1887 it was destroyed by fire and was rebuilt in 1888. So the building isn't the oldest, just the congregation. See link below for more details.
