John Browning's Auto-5 or Humpback never enjoyed the popularity in combat of the Winchester Model 12, or the even more popular Winchester Model 97 when fitted with the heat shield and M-1917 bayonet adapter. a weapon which was still in use during the Vietnam War. Perhaps the complexity of an auto loader was to blame, or it may have been tradition or the exposed hammer that was useful at night that kept the M97 around for so long. The Auto-5 was certainly found aboard countless naval vessels, and may be even today. The Remington Model 870 became the riot gun of choice beginning in 1950, but there are plenty of the older weapons in storage and in armories around the country.
