If you are referring to the 13 colonies that became the US, Massachusetts was northernmost because Maine was part of Massachusetts until it was admitted as a separate state in 1820. It was not as far north as any of the later states from Minnesota west to Washington, which all reached the 49th degree of latitude. Of these, Minnesota had a tiny bit of land north of that parallel.
