As leader of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, a civil rights organization, King became prominent in the non-violent rallies and boycotts in major Southern cities from 1957 to 1964. His nationwide organizing efforts, along with those of other black leaders, culminated in the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. As a powerful and charismatic speaker, King became the public face of the movement for equal rights for African Americans.

He was still actively involved in implementing civil and voting rights when he was shot and killed in Memphis, Tennessee on April 4, 1968.
