His original name was Maewyn Succat and he was a Roman citizen living in Britain, probably Scotland. He eventually was named a bishop and was sent back to Ireland as a missionary. Patrick was not canonized as the system did not exist at the time of his death. He was declared a saint by the early Christian community based on his life of heroic virtue in driving the pagan gods out of Ireland.
