During the French Revolution, the Third Estate came to be known as the bourgeoisie (pronounced booj-schwah-ZEE). The commoners (shop-owners, artisans, etc.), that decided they would try to dress nothing like the royalty in Versailles (pronounced vuhr-SIE), and be as little like King Louis XVI and his Queen, Marie Antoinette, were known as the sans-culottes, which translates directly to "without breeches". This name was given because men in the sans-culottes wore full-length pans as opposed to the old way of wearing calf-length breeches.
