The first Canadian colonies, which included the Red River Colony, were acquired from Britain to expand Canadian territory and to ensure a secure route to the West Coast. Without Rupert's Land British Columbia would not join the Confederation and Canada would have to deal with American encroachment from the West.

While most of the colonies became provinces, Canada still has three colonies called Territories, administered by Canada.
