What was the relationship like between the American colonists and the king of England?

The colonies were created by English companies under charter with the Crown and by emigration from England (primarily). The relationship was present from the start, and lasted until the American Revolution.

Roughly about one third of colonists wanted independence from England and were called Patriots. Loyalist remained loyal to King George and people called fence -sitters didn't believe in fighting or were just fine with the government.

England (Britain)'s initial relationship with the 13 Colonies (Now the USA) was a good one. This was true until Britain made taxes on different things (mostly tea), and made different acts that annoyed the 13 Colonies (i.e. Stamp Act, Quebec Act). The 13 Colonies rebelled by dumping British tea into the Boston harbour which was later called the Boston Tea Party. All these things added together to start the American Revolution.

The colonies were controlled by England until the Revolutionary War. The colonies won their freedom and that's where we get the Declaration of Independence. The 13 original colonies progressed from there, going through a few gold rushes, a few more wars, and adding more territories, all building up to what we now call the United States of America.

In the beginning, not bad at all. Even during the Revolution there was a sizable number of colonists who called themselves 'royalists' and who chose not to fight the King. It has to be remembered though that the King at the time already had a mostly ceremonial role and that the real disputes were between the colonists and the British Government and Parliament.
