The Confederate bombardment of the US Fort Sumter in the harbor of Charleston, South Carolina was an important event in the history of the US. The fort was forced to surrender and this led directly into the US Civil War. President Lincoln called for the enlistment of 75,000 volunteers for military duty for a period of three months. This resulted in the secession of four more Southern states. These were Virginia, North Carolina, Arkansas and Tennessee. Tennessee seceded in June of 1861.
