The Schleiffen Plan was an attempt by the German army to avoid war on both fronts (during WWI) by attacking France before they became involved. It was created by Alfred von Schleiffen and it required a disregard of the neutrality of Belgium and the Netherlands in order to sweep France quickly. German officials calculated that it would take 29 days for France to fall and immediately after their victory some German troops would mobilize and head back east to assist the troops against the Russians. It didn't really work out very well, the German army miscalculated the strength of the French and the speed of Russian troops and that resulted in years of trench warfare.
The allies and rivalries relate to world war 1 because if one country fought with another, both country's allies would come and join the fight. This is what happenned in ww1. Although the assassination of franz ferdiand and the schleiffen plan didn't helkp much either.

The result of the failure of the Schlieffen plan was that the Germans - instead of quickly defeating France - got stuck fighting a 4-year trench war in France which they ultimately lost. And they then had to fight the two-fronts war with the Allies and Russia that the Schlieffen plan was drawn up to avoid.
Even though people accused Germany of starting World War 1, they never made the claim that the Schlieffen Plan was the problem. Rather it was that Germany chose to follow through on their alliance with Austria-Hungary and attack Russia, thereby triggerring the British and French alliances with Russia.

Alfred Graf von Schlieffen was the Chief of the Imperial German General Staff. He served in this position from 1891 to 1906.
Germany invaded Belgium, using a strategy called the Schleiffen Plan. As troops swept across Belgium, thousands of civilians fled in terror. In Brussels, the Belgian capital, an American war correspondent described the first major refugee crisis of the 20th century.

The future tense of the verb "plan" is "will plan".
On June 28, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir presumptive to the throne of Austria-Hungary, was visiting Sarajevo, in Bosnia, a province of Austria-Hungary, when he and his wife, Sophie, were assassinated by Gavrilo Princip, a Bosnian Serb revolutionary. Austria-Hungary wanted revenge and presented Serbia with a list of demands that it couldn't accept. So, to teach the Serbs a lesson, Austria-Hungary, backed by its ally Germany, declared war on Serbia. The Serbs had the support of Russia, which declared a mobilization on July 30. On August 1, Germany declared war on Russia. Well, that was one of the triggers. Throughout the month of July and early August, there was all sorts of diplomatic wrangling and exchanges of messages among the future participants. In any event, war would have come anyway. In 1903-5 Germany developed the Schleiffen plan to invade the Low Countries and France and attack Russia. The plan was changed in 1906, when Helmuth von Moltke succeeded Count Alfred Schleiffen as chief of the German general staff. Moltke altered the plan and, it is generally believed, weakened it (but that's another story). The plan called for the invasion of Belgium. Britain had pledged to guarantee Belgium's neutrality. When Germany actually invaded Belgium, Britain declared war on Germany. On August 3, Germany declared war on France. Belgium was next on August 4. Also on August 4, Britain sent Germany an ultimatum to stop violating Belgium's neutrality. That's the gist of the war's beginning. The chain of events leading up to war is complicated-- Gjampol
