What was the significance Robert E. Lee did during the civil war?

After graduating from West Point, Lee became a member of the US. Army and began a long and remarkable military career. He distinguished himself in the Mexican War earning three honorary field promotions. His accomplishments were many including Assistant to the Chief of the Engineer Corps and Superintendent of West Point. In later years he was appointed President of what is now called "Washington and Lee University" in Lexington, Virginia. President Lincoln had asked Lee to command the Union Armies and respectively rejected this notion. Robert E. Lee vigorously opposed slavery and as early as 1856 made this statement: "There are few, I believe, in this enlightened age, who will not acknowledge that slavery as an institution is a moral and political evil." Lee also knew that the use of slaves was coming to an end. Cyrus McCormick's 1831 invention of the mule-drawn mechanical reaper sounded the death knell for the use of slave labor. Before the Civil War began, 250,000 slaves had already been freed.

Robert Lee, was a great general who commanded the Confederate Army in the American Civil War. He is one of the most beloved figures in American history. Lee's fame rests on his military achievements as Confederate commander in the face of overwhelming odds, and on his outstanding personal character. He won the admiration and respect of both Northerners as well as Southerners. Even after Lee was forced to surrender to Union General Ulysses S. Grant, the Union General made the statement about Robert E, Lee:

"There was not a man in the Confederacy whose influence with the whole people was as great as his."

After the war, Lee served as president of Washington College, in Lexington, Virginia.

Robert E. Lee brought great leadership to the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. He was able to inspire loyalty among his soldiers and he led them to achieve remarkable victories in battle against odds which always favored the other side. The soldiers who served and fought under Lee willingly suffered and endured tremendous hardships and privations and gave their full-measure of devotion to him as their leader.By contrast, the Army of the Potomac had seven changes of command from the appointment of George McClellan to Ulysses Grant while Lee was commander of the A.N.V.(which he named) from June 1, 1862 to the end of the war.
