The Americans lost ground to the British in the first attack because of disagreements between Benedict Arnold and Horatio Gates.

Horatio Gates held a defensive position and repelled the second British attack. Benedict Arnold, seeing that the British were weak to a counterattack, then led a charge against them. The British surendered 3 days later.
