As at all extermination camps, the population of the camp at any given time was very small. It was a killing factory and nothing else. The new arrivals were gassed and buried as soon as practical after they entered the camp. It was probably the most 'efficient' of all the Nazi killing factories. About 434,500 victims were killed and there were only two (!) known survivors at the end of the war.
The 'permanent' population consisted of about 1,500 prisoners who had to help the SS by digging mass graves and sorting the victims' belongings.
