The Albany Plan, proposed by Benjamin Franklin, was based off of the Iroquis Confederacy and basically wanted to create a united front for the colonies to present. The Albany Plan would have been the very first form of Federal Government for the US, but was soundly rejected due to the colonists' fears that the plan would take away rights of the citizens, due to its ability to tax and unite the colonies.
