Because of all the wet mud. The soldiers got trenchfoot because the trenches were covered in mud. The soldiers had to stand in the mud for days on end! The mud is what caused it!
If a soldier was wounded and fell in mud during battle it is quite possible that they would drown if not rescued. This happened to many soldiers at Frommelles and Paschendale. It was always difficult and dangerous for stretcher bearers and other soldiers to rescue wounded men who were out in 'no mans land'. Because of this many men would be left until night or a time when it was safer to move out and collect them. You have to remember that at times there were hundreds of wounded soldiers laying in the mud. It was rare for a soldier wounded in their own trench to drown in mud. Even in battle there was always a mate nearby to drag them out of mud or water.
During war , soldiers dig long trenches to hide from the enemy's attack. Trenches are dug in mud hence keep the trench cold and makes the survival easy for the soldier.
When they had something to eat, they ate it in the trench in the mud and freezing water up to their waists in many cases.

Hell in knee high mud.
It was disgusting in the trenches. It stank, and there were rats running everywhere. The trenches were very shallow and small. There were usually dead bodies and injured bodies just lying around everywhere. It was not a nice place at all. When it rained, the rain mixed with mud and filled the trenches up with smelly stinky mud. Hope this helps =]

They had a primitive machine gun and whenever the men went "over the top" they used bayonets attached to rifles tanks were invented then but mud made them hard to operate making them impossible to use in trench warfare
Soldiers in the trenches during World War I constructed duckboards, which were wooden walkways laid over the muddy ground, to keep themselves out of the water and mud. They also wore high rubber boots to protect their feet and legs. Additionally, sandbags were used to reinforce the trench walls and keep water from seeping in.
