Historians agree that he alone was responsible for Britain not concluding a peace treaty with Germany somewhere in 1941 but instead carrying on the fight. Such a peace treaty would probably have left Russia to fight by itself when Hitler invaded it and it would probably have given US politicians all the arguments they wanted not to get involved in Europe's war.
