The Atomic Bomb
It provided an alternative to the planned invasion of japan which would have cost thousands of lifes
Using chemical weapons (which were being stockpiled already for use in the invasion). Using biological weapons (not really available at the time), Walking away and letting Japan take back the pacific and asia.
The invasion of Mainland Japan, which was the only other alternative, and which would have been horrifically costly in lives - both American and Japanese.
battle of the coral sea halt Japan's invasion of Australia and the battle of midways halted Japan's expantion westward
Japan refused to surrender despite being surrounded, and the US had to decide whether to preform a costly invasion that have heavy casualties or used a secret weapon that had been developed. Guess what they picked
No- she was targeted because of her refusal to surrender, and because the alternative of a conventional invasion was felt to be way too costly in Allied lives. The original target of the atom bomb was to have been Nazi Germany, not Japan.

First, the US and Japan were at war, and had BEEN at war for over 3.5 years, Japan having attacked the US without warning. Japan had refused to surrender. The alternative- a conventional invasion of the Japanese home islands, was projected to result in the death of more than 1 million Allied service members, and a larger number of Japanese military and civilian personnel. After the first atomic weapon was used, Japan again refused surrender. After the second atomic weapon was used, they surrendered.
The alternative was to invade Japan with conventional forces. For the US, the bloodiest land battle in the pacific, was Okinawa. An invasion of the Japan Islands themselves, would have been double or triple the casualties.
