He was a hero of the Mexican War and lead the marines that captured John Brown at Harpers Ferry. Had Virginia stayed in the union he would have been commander of their army after Winfield Scott retired.

Lee was brilliant when fighting in defense of his own territory. He excelled at a Spoiling Offensive, in which he aggressively attacked an army that was sent to attack him, before it was able to do so. He was less successful at following us those victories, possibly because he had such meager resources to draw on. Where he failed most miserably, possibly for the same reason, was his inability to carry out a successful offensive campaign in enemy territory. Plus, at least at Gettysburg, he allowed his emotions to overcome his reason and ordered futile frontal assaults by forces with inferior numbers against well prepared defensive positions: an act which he knew was almost always doomed to failure.
