The only plays allowed in the middle ages were called Miracle Plays or Mystery Plays. These plays focused on the representation of Bible stories in churches as tableaux with accompanying antiphonal song. They developed from the 10th to the 16th century, reaching the height of their popularity in the 15th century, before being rendered obsolete by the rise of professional theatre. Their purpose was to teach morality to an uneducated and illiterate public.

The medieval "drama" wasn't like today. The church had passion plays about the stories of The Bible to teach the people, and it was actually from these that the secular drama developed. Feudal lords would put on plays often as a part of the tournaments they held for the people of the area/estates. They mainly had acrobats, jesters, jugglers, troubadours, mimes, bards, storytellers and minstrels for entertainment.

Many of the actors were travellers, moving from town to town to perform, usually at outdoor stages. However, there were particular genres which were performed by members of the community. "Cycle" plays were annual summer performances in which the community took part, but only the males were permitted to act - no women.

When it came to drama later such as the Shakespearean plays, they were also always performed by professional male actors. No women ever acted.

I know of only one famous medieval stage performer, who was Empress Theodora of the Byzantine Empire. She was an actress before marrying Justinian I. She lived from 500 to 548.
