Among the Plains and marginally-Plains tribes buffalo robes served many functions.
They were used as bedding - both for a kind of mattress and as coverings. They provided the only warm outer garment in cool weather, because no coats or other outer clothing was worn. They were often decorated in specific ways to indicate the sex of the wearer and sometimes display a warrior's war record.
Paint was often applied in incised lines on the inner surface of a robe, while the hair was left intact on the outer surface, which was worn next to the body. Among some tribes a woman's robe would bear a rectangular geometric design known today as "box and border"; a man's robe might feature a circular radiating design similar to a war bonnet, or images and symbols of warfare, horse raids and wounds received.
A Blackfoot Oman's robe collected in 1833 is tanned almost white and has a painted pattern of seven narrow, parallel bands of geometric designs in yellow ochre, green, red and black. This robe is now in the German Museum of Leather in Offenbach.

The Wichita people utilized buffalo hide primarily for making clothing and shelter. They crafted warm garments, such as robes and leggings, to protect themselves from the elements. Additionally, buffalo hides were used to construct tipis, providing durable and weather-resistant homes for their communities.
The buffalo was the mainstay for the Plains tribes, not just Sioux. The buffalo provided most of the People's meat, which was dried to keep over winter. They provided hides for shelter and for robes. The buffalo horns made utensils. Basically every part of the buffalo was used in one form or another.
The buffalo was used by the Native American tribes of the plains for everything they needed to live. It gave them food, the hides gave shelter and clothing. Nothing on the animal was wasted. Louis and Clark may have killed one for the same reasons or been given meat and hides by the tribes they met.

Indians did not have buffalo they would hunt them but also use them for skin tipi covers, hide robes, fuel , tools , weapons and equipment . They also used hoofs to make glue, they turned bones into ornaments and buffalo tails became a fly swish.
Buffalo herds declined in the 1830s and 1840s due to increased demand for buffalo robes. The demand in commercial centers like New York and St. Louis nearly led the species to extinction.

Just like men, women wore their everyday clothes (dress and leggings in the case of women) but added warm buffalo hide robes with the hair left on. Their moccasins might be insulated with buffalo fur stuffed inside, but otherwise they did not wear any other special clothing. In the coldest weather everyone remained inside their lodges (tipis) with a warm fire burning and snug buffalo robes for bedding. Later, trade blankets replaced buffalo hide robes.
