Just about that. Although the German flying bombs were more often than not referred to by their actual names V-1 & V-2 the V1 was sometimes called the "buzz bomb." The Japanese "Ohka" rocket was actually manned, and the pilot guided the machine into its target...effective when it hit...but it only sunk one (possibly two) US warship(s) during the war. Nicknamed "Baka" (fool) by US Sailors, it was released from its mother ship (a Betty bomber) enroute to target, as the craft dropped from the mother's belly the pilot ignited his rocket engine and made the short run into his objective...which had to be straight as this particular machine wasn't designed for aerobatics!

The Nazi Germans used "self flying bombs" known as V2 rockets. There were two types actually. The second type they developed could fly into London and it was so quiet you could not tell where and when the rocket would land. These bombs were the precursors to the missiles we have now. There were also the bombs dropped by the Luftwaffe (German Air Force) on the Royal Army Air Force locations, the seaports and cities.
