Native Americans lived in the area long before Michigan was invented and state boundaries meant absolutely nothing to them. The tribes of that area were the Ojibwe or Chippewa, the Menominee, Potawatomi, Miami, Sauk (Sac), Fox (Mesquakie) and Kickapoo. All had their own language, and there were often different words in each language, so there was never a single term for "house".

For example, Ojibwe words for house include waaginogaan, wiigiwaam, miigiwaamens.

In Menominee some of the words for a house are apa:kiwika:n, matae:peh, ne:k, we:kewam, owe:kew.

In Potawatomi the word for house is wigwam.

In the Miami-Illinois language a native dwelling is called wiikiiamii.
