He was the first European to discover the Bahamas, Cuba, Hispaniola, Central America, and the northern coast of South America. Columbus also discovered a trade route across the Atlantic using winds that blow from east to west. (These winds today are called trade winds, and are still used by sea captains today.) In 1492, Columbus was able to convince King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella to finance his ships and voyage. On October 28, 1492, he and his ships successfully reach Cuba. In September, he established a settlement in the New World. In 1492, he became the first European to land in South America.
