In the US? What time period?

During early US settlement farming was a source of income, but the $$ wasn't great. Unless you grew tobacco, the crop this country was built on (basically). There were blacksmiths that made horseshoes, household utensils (pots, pans etc.), & weapons. Hunters & trappers caught food & furs either for their own families or for trade. Men who were in politics were either still receiving a stipend from the King or collecting funds on the "campaign trail". Church parishioners donated what they could to the church for building improvements, religious literature or to benefit the community. If this is for homework just think about possible jobs that come from living off the land: fishing, hunting, farming etc. Some colonies were still importing goods from other countries, including the Mother Land. They could take these to markets to sell (fabric for clothes, china, spices (from the Orient) non domestic animals (pigs, dogs etc) & even slaves not just from Africa but from where ever else they could obtain cheap or even free labour.
