What is The knights of labor?

The Knights of Labor was a labor union organized in 1869 by a group of tailors led by Uriah P. Stephens. They were a semi-secret Labor Union because at that time, men who joined Unions or attempted to organize workers were fired from their jobs. The Knights did not put emphasis on politics, like earlier unions, but stressed better working conditions, better pay, and job safety. The Knights welcomed all workers but saloonkeepers, lawyers, and gamblers. They did accept women and African-Americans as members, but not Roman Catholics. The Knights also attracted unskilled workers, a group that had not been unionized prior to the Knights. Terence V. Powderly succeeded Stephens as Union leader and made the Knights more public and acceptable to Catholics. The membership continued to grow. While Powderly did not like strikes, the Knights did win a series of strikes against employers. The beginning of the end of the influence of the Knights of Labor was the 1886 Haymarket Square strike. Membership fell when the Knights were unfairly accused of causing the strike.

What is the purpose of a labor strike?

the reason most people go on strike is because they want a raise or the employeer isn't meeting their expectations. Workers strike either to protest alleged violations of labor law (unfair labor practice strikes) or to pressure the employer to agree to money issues in contract negotiation (economic strikes). All strikers can be replaced if they walk out. Economic strikers can be PERMANENTLY replaced.

Why is Samuel gompers important?

He promoted "thorough" organization and collective bargaining to secure shorter hours and higher wages, the first essential steps, he believed, to emancipating labor. He also encouraged the AFL (American Federation of Labor) to take political action to "elect their friends" and "defeat their enemies." His belief led to the development of procedures for collective bargaining and contracts between labor and management which are still in use today. In practice, AF of L unions were important in industrial cities, where they formed a central labor office to coordinate the actions of different AF of L unions. Issues of wages and hours were the usual causes of strikes, but many strikes were assertions of jurisdiction, so that the plumbers, for example, used strikes to ensure that all major construction projects in the city used union plumbers. In this goal they were ideally supported by all the other construction unions in the AF of L fold.

What was the knight of labor and what success did it have in improving working conditions?

The Knights of Labor was a labor organization founded in 1869 that sought to unite all workers, regardless of skill level, race, or gender, to advocate for better working conditions, fair wages, and an eight-hour workday. It gained significant influence in the 1880s, leading successful strikes and campaigns that improved labor conditions for many workers. However, its impact diminished after the Haymarket Affair in 1886, which led to a decline in public support and internal divisions. Ultimately, while it raised awareness about workers' rights, its long-term successes were limited due to various challenges.
