After the Spanish-American War, Aguinaldo (The Filipino leader) called for freedom. He said that the U.S. had promised freedom for the Philippines. The U.S. didn't grant them freedom, we wanted to maintain control over the islands to prevent other nations from seizing control. They continued to write their on constitution and elected Aguinaldo as president. That is when fighting broke out.
