Ultimately it was Hitler's idea to regain Germany's lost land and lost dignity after their defeat of WWI. Japan has a major role in this as well as their "Island Nation" didn't have the necessary Natural Resources to become a world power; IE; no oil fields and refineries to run their war machine which were heavily engaged in China.

After Hitler attacked Poland, under false pretenses, in September of 1939, Britain had no choice but to side with Poland and declare war on Germany and it's allies. These "Axis Allies" consisting primarily of Japan, Italy, and to a smaller extent, Finland. Finland sided with Germany grudgingly due to Russia. In 1941 Russia invaded Finland and this short invasion became known as the "Winter War" as it didn't take Finland long to stop the invasion and bring it to a stalemate. However, as the saying goes, "the enemy of my enemy is my friend", and Finland's enemy was an extremely powerful and capable one, so Finland did what it believed was necassary and allied themselves with the devil for national security.

Britain fought valiantly almost single handedly against the axis powers for 2 years before Japan "awoke the sleeping giant" in the United States on December 7, 1941 thus truly making it a "World War".
