Well, the Ruhr was Germany's key industrial state. it was rich in raw material and it is where the majority of Germany's money came from. However, with the crippling fees that were paying reparations, little money was available in Germany, so Germany was even more reliant on the Ruhr. Then Germany found itself unable to pay the reparations back, there was no money. In January 1923, the French Government used this almost an excuse to invade the Ruhr. They, with Belgium, claimed that Germany had defaulted on reparations. They wanted to detach the Ruhr from Germany and make it into a French satellite state (basically, a part of France). When France and Belgium occupied the Ruhr, the Germans could not fight back because of the terms of the Treaty Of Versailles. They had a tiny army and were not allowed the army in the demilitarised zone. So the German Workers took to resist the occupying French and Belgians by other means. The German Workers went on strike and worked slowly and made faulty goods on purpose. This was called Passive Resistance. However, this proved a problem for Germany as now, their 'money maker' if you like, wasn't making any money. They now had virtually NO money coming in. To combat this, the German government printed more money. A lot more. This sent inflation sky high. So they printed more and more money. You see, the more money you print, the less it becomes worth. It's confusing but yeah. That's what happens. and soon German money (the mark) became worthless. People had to carry their money in wheelbarrows just to buy a loaf of bread. This rapid and extreme case of inflation is called HYPERINFLATION and this is the only time it ever happened. This was a consequence for Germany of the occupation of the Ruhr in 1923. It sent Germany into crisis.
