Genghis's troops had ridden westwards, in 1218conquering Qara-Khitai, in Central Asia. In campaigns between 1219 and 1223 Genghis conquered and devastated the empire of the Khwārazm-shāh, the Muslim ruler of most of what is now Iran, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. The massacre and destruction inflicted on such great cities as Bukhārā, Samarkand, and Harāt was on a massive and previously unparalleled scale. Genghis Khan died in 1227, leading a punitive expedition against Hsi-Hsia.
