Why did Japan become the United States' next military foe after World War 2?

It didn't. The U.S. fought against Japan during WW2, ending with Japanese surrender following the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. After the war the Japanese (and American occupiers) wrote a new constitution for Japan which limited its military power. Japan has not been at war with anyone since World War II.
