The F4 Phantom II was one of the very rare aircraft during the war that was flown by all three branches of the US Military (discounting the US Army which was not authorized fixed wing attack airplanes). The others were:
1. A1 Skyraider, a propeller driven (originally) a dive bomber (flown primarily by the USAF & USN).
2. A7 Corsair II.
The number one way to tell the difference between a USAF and USN/USMC attack plane LATER during the Viet War was; the USAF Phantoms, Corsairs, and Skyraiders were painted in camoflage. The USN/USMC Phantoms, etc. were not painted in camo. USN/USMC jets were solid colors of white or gray or silver or combinations of white/gray/silver.
But it's important to remember that early in the war, USAF jets were not painted in camo, they were metal colored (or whitish/or grayish, or combinations of all, similar to the USN, etc.).

He/She is a Veitnam Era Veteran.
You are a Vietnam Era Veteran but not a Vietnam War Veteran
Not everyone who served during the era of the Vietnam War went to Vietnam. Some remained in cantonment. Some participated in other military actions during this era (e.g., the occupation of the Dominican Republic, etc.). Some were stationed in other countries in support of operations in Vietnam. "Vietnam-era veteran" refers to them.
Two things that have changed since the Vietnam era are communications and the cost of living.

The Vietnam War was a headache and even Hollywood was taking a gamble when it made a film about it. Even the term Vietnam War is not often used. To this day, the term "Vietnam War" is called "Conflict" or "Vietnam Era." The Vietnam War is something the US military, Hollywood, Book Publishing Companies, Toy Manufacturing Companies, etc. try to avoid. Names such as "Modern Era" or "Modern Era War Planes", or "Modern Era Tanks" will be used in lieu of "Vietnam War Planes", etc. America wants to forget the Vietnam War; which is why Jan Scruggs had the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall built in 1982...his idea was, "OK America, you can forget about the war...but not the men you sent to fight it!" The Vietnam War was popular during the war, ONLY in that it had to be reported by the news and the news media, magazines, and by the military in order to replace or repair the machines needed to fight the war.
The Vietnam War 'era' was 1961 to 1975.
