In the United Kingdom or rather Great Britain there were shelters called Anderson Shelters for people who wanted to have shelters at their homes. There were shelters in the cities that were located in basements, underground facilities, train stations and commercial places.

Unquestionably the best shelters of WW2 were the concrete gun turrets and bunkers that Germany built as part of the Atlantic Wall. I have seen and been in many of these . Some have large pock marks in the concrete where British and other battleships fired large shells at them. I never saw any that were destroyed by this.
