Although there are essentially two types of Viking ships (wardhips and merchant ships) these can be broken down further.

1. LONGSHIPS – WARSHIPS

  • Great ship: Large longship that may have had from 30-37 rooms (ie 60 to 74 oars).
  • Skeid: Long, narrow warships of between 20 to 35 sections.
  • Busse: Large, sturdy, sea-going longships
  • Barde: A sturdy warship with a special, ironstudded prow
  • Sud: Large longships from 20 sections
  • Snekke: Perhaps mainly used as a crew carrier .
  • Drake/dragon : Large warships with dragon head for chieftains and kings.

2. MERCHANT SHIPS:

  • Knarr: Sea-going trading ship
  • Karve: A smaller for transporting passenger along the coast.
  • Byrdin : Vessel for carrying goods along the coast and shorter sea voyages
