Locke has a difficult time with family. He was abandoned by his dad and cheated out of a kidney. Locke is an emotional cripple, narcissistic, he appears unable to make good choices. He leaves his loving Helen to do a walk about. He cannot understand her love for him. On the island he is dynamic and filled with faith in the island and feels directed to do its will. He again abandons all relationships and moves to doing what the island wants him to do, even when it demands his own life.

Locke is full of faith and appears very courageous, and convincing, and stubborn , when he doesn't need his wheelchair it is like faith healed him miraculously. He shows great faith in the island, which now appears to be the Man in Black, that is directing him. He shows great strength of character and appears to know what he is doing. He often has many people who willingly follow him and do what he asks of them, while a few people seem to see that he is not always doing what they think should be done, like Jack Sheppard who often disagrees with Locke, but Jack also lacks faith, both is his life off the island and on. In the last episode we have seen Jack is now believing and has shown faith, converted, if you will to the island, like John was, but perhaps to Jacob's side and not the Man in Black, Jack also being a candidate for protector of the island, protector against the Man in Black.
