General Douglas McArthur was serving as Field Marshal of the Philippine Army when his air force was destroyed by the Japanese on December 8, 1941 immediately after their attack on Pearl Harbor. The Japanese invasion of the Philippines forced McArthur to retreat to Bataan until May 1942 when he was forced to leave and promised to return.

He landed in Palo, Leyte and made good his promise, "I shall return," to liberate the Philippines from the Japanese. The Leyte landing happened on October 20, 1944.
