There are 5 different stories about where the cheeseburger began and when. Let's start with the hamburger. The story goes back to the 11th century and the Mongols putting meat under their saddles to eat later raw. This use of meat spread to Moscow and the idea of a flat patty of meat was taken to Hamburg, Germany by sailors. From there it went to NYC and was known as a Hamburg Steak. This is where it gets tricky. The hamburger bun is said to have been invented in 1916 by Walter Anderson a short order cook and founder of the White Castle chain. One claim of inventing the hamburger sandwich comes from Charlie Nagreen of Wisconsin in 1885. He was selling meatballs at the county fair but customers found them hard to eat while walking around the fair so he flattened it and put it into a sandwich he called a "hamburger." Hamburg NY also claims credit for the invention by the Menches brothers at the county fair in 1885. A third claim comes from a small diner in New Haven Connecticut and Louis lunch counter in 1900. The first cheeseburger was created between 1924 and 1926 by a chef named Lionel Sternberger in Pasadena CA. The story goes that a homeless man suggested that Sternberger should add a slice of cheese to his order. Sternberger then added this to his main menu and the cheeseburger was born. Other places have claimed the invention of the cheeseburger. Kaelin's restaurant in Louisville, Kentucky has claimed that they invented it in 1934.
