Wow, a story with a lot of history. The short answer is Turkey had once conquered Cyprus. After some intervening political steps, Cyprus became an independent entity. In 1974 Turkey invaded Cyprus, supposedly to prevent the ethnic cleansing (murder) of the minority once Turkish population by the majority Greek population.
