According to the US Military Dictionary, the Battle of Manila Bay was:

"a one-sided battle in the Philippines on May 1, 1898. The U.S. Navy's Asiatic Squadron, led by Commodore George Deweyand armed with modern warships, easily destroyed the weak and meager Spanish squadron, and blockaded Manila. This decisive triumph made Dewey a popular figure, and more importantly, paved the way to the American annexation of the Philippines, thus helping to secure victory in the Spanish-American War(1898)."
