== == On December 8th 1941, the Japanese attacked the Allied forces that were defending the area around Hong Kong. After a long and heroic battle, the defenders were forced to surrender on Christmas Day the 25th of December. Surrounded and out of food and water, the British, Canadian and Indian troops were taken prisoner and began a four year period of touture , starvation and death. The Japanese treated them like slaves and forced them to work in dangerous and brutal conditions, in coal mines and factories. At the end of the war in 1945, only about half of the original number of POW;s were still alive. Many of those that did survive died at a young age due to the lack of proper food and the beatings that they were subjected to by their captors.
