Confederate General Robert Seldon Garnett graduated from West Point in 1841. His graduating class of 52 cadets had Garnett ranked 27th. General Garnett was involved in the early battle in western Virginia. He was forced to retreat there, giving the Union a foothold in Virginia. He was also the first general to die in the war. He was killed shortly after the Battle of Rich Mountain in 1861.

Confederate General Alexander Robert Lawton graduated from West Point in 1839. Among his graduating class of 31 cadets, Lawton was ranked 13th. Lawton saw action at the Battle of Antietam and the Peninsula campaign. After being wounded he became the Confederate Quartermaster.

General Robert E. Lee was the leading general of the Confederacy. He was a Virginian who was a West Point graduate. He was enlisted in the US Military at the start of the war, however his loyalty to Virginia and the Confederate cause led him to be the top general of the South. His main command was to lead the Army of Northern Virginia.
