The first unification of France would have been under Julius Caesar, though not as a country, as the province of Gaul as part of rome. in 486 it was united into a country by clovis, but not all of it, just mainly Normandy. However, it expanded almost constantly until the end of the reign of Charlemagne, by that time encompassing all of modern France, the baque region, northern Italy, the Netherlands, and rhineland. The modern state of France was created with the the signing of the constitution of the fifth republic (first was between Louis 16 and napolean, second between napolean and napolean 3, third between WWI and II, fourth between 1946 and 58, fifth is 58-present)
